In 1951 Somerset Maugham selected those stories that he wished to be preserved and described in the Preface for each of three volumes the principles which guided their arrangement.
Certain stories, for both literary and geographical reasons, must necessarily lie together. On the other hand, the reader’s pleasure and convenience are better served if shorter stories are interspaced be tween longer ones. Nor should the reader be asked, as Mr Maugham puts it, “to leap suddenly from China to Peru and back again”.
These three volumes may be regarded as the definitive edition of Maugham’s short stories.
