NP47 Mediterranean Pilot Volume 3 is the official Admiralty Sailing Direction covering the Ionian Sea, the western coast of Greece and the Adriatic Sea. It was published by the UK Hydrographic Office in 2014, as the fifteenth edition of this title. The volume belongs to a series of 76 Admiralty Pilots that, together with the official Admiralty charts, cover the world’s main navigable waters. It is therefore a specialist nautical reference, not a literary work.
This volume covers the Ionian Sea bordering the western coast of Greece, including Patraïkós Kólpos and Korinthiakós Kólpos, as well as the entire Adriatic Sea. It contains detailed information on navigational hazards, buoyage, pilotage, port facilities, regulations and seasonal currents along these coasts. In addition, it includes notes on climatic conditions, together with photographs and sketches that help bridge crews recognise headlands, harbour entrances and other landmarks. Sailing Directions such as NP47 Mediterranean Pilot Volume 3 are designed to complement official Admiralty charts, rather than replace them. Moreover, they are regularly updated through Notices to Mariners and republished, on average, every three years. For this reason, an older edition like this 2014 fifteenth edition is mainly of historical, collecting or reference interest. It is no longer suitable for actual navigation, since later editions have since superseded it.
NP47 Mediterranean Pilot Volume 3, published by the UK Hydrographic Office in 2014, will mainly interest collectors of Admiralty publications and maritime history enthusiasts. It may also appeal to sailors and skippers planning to cruise the Ionian and Adriatic coasts. However, they should always check for a current edition before relying on it for navigation.
