The Royal Society of London for Improving Natural Knowledge has since its foundation in 1660 acquired portraits in oil, mainly by gift, and these have been hung in the Society’s rooms in its various homes throughout the centuries. Additionally, busts in marble, bronze or plaster have been presented or commissioned and these have been similarly displayed. The whole collection today, 148 paintings and 24 busts, of eminent scientists and other personages includes many of artistic excellence.
This first illustrated catalogue of the portraits in oil and busts in the posses sion of the Royal Society includes details of their origins and names of the artists verified from the Society’s records and biographies of the subjects. An index of artists is appended.
