This book presents a picture of the very varied scientific work now in progress in the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic. Papers within the broad headings of life sciences, Earth sciences and atmospheric sciences are grouped together. While not representing all the studies being undertaken by the community of Antarctic orientated nations, the wide coverage demon strates the need, and the opportunity, for research in that least known part of the globe. The original studies lead naturally to the posing of new questions, requiring further work. At the same time it becomes clear that the special environment provides a laboratory in which new knowledge, unobtainable else where, can be gained in many disciplines. Such contributions from the Antarctic complement the studies from more accessible and compre hensively known parts of the world.
