Sofu Teshigahara was born in Tokyo on December 17, 1900. He founded the Sogetsu School at the age of twenty-six, and since that time has devoted his life to the development and teaching of Japanese flower arrangement. He has been an honorary adviser to Ikebana International since 1956, and President of the Japanese Ikebana Association since 1958. Because of Sofu’s modern, original approach to flower arrangement, the school rapidly gained a tremendous following throughout Japan, and at present his methods are taught at 115 branches, with a total of almost one million students enrolled. As a result of Sofu’s intensive efforts at introducing his art abroad, including exhibitions in the major cities of Europe and the United States, the Sogetsu School has established teaching facilities in Hawaii, New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Paris, Brussels, Singapore, New Delhi, and in Australia. Sofu is also an active sculptor and calligrapher.
