The name Sogetsu is known throughout Japan as one of the leading schools of flower arrangement, and its reputation is rapidly spreading to Western countries as well. Each of the fortyeight arrangements presented here was prepared especially for this book by Kasumi Teshigawara, whose father is the founder and head of the school. They are reproduced in strikingly beautiful color, with the author’s explanation of the theme or inspiration of each. While this is a show-case of the school’s outstanding works, it is at the same time a very practical guide designed to enable even inexperienced persons to duplicate any or all arrangements. Basic arrangements, cutting, bending, and placement techniques are explained and illustrated, providing the beginner with the fundamentals of this fascinating art. Substitute materials are listed to allow for geographical variations in plants available. Also included are creations for special occasions, such as Christmas and Easter, as well as displays for each season. Both classical and modern arrangements are presented to suit a wide range of tastes. The book thus holds equal value and attraction for both beginning and advanced students of flower arranging.
